New plan aims to improve diabetes care

The Children and Young People's National Diabetes Network has launched its Delivery Plan to 2030.

The plan sets out how services will work together to improve care for children and young people with diabetes in England and Wales.

The plan was shaped by health teams, partner groups, children, young people and families.

A lot has improved in the last 10 years. New tools and new ways of working have helped many children and young people manage their diabetes.

But there is still more to do. Care is not the same in every area. Some children find it harder to get the help they need. Services are also under pressure.

The plan looks at eight key areas:

  • Schools and Social Care
  • Diabetes Care and Treatment
  • DKA Prevention
  • Early-Stage Type 1 Diabetes
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Teenage and Young Adult Care
  • Workforce and Leadership
  • Type 1 Diabetes and Disordered Eating

A key aim of the plan is to make care fair for all. It aims to reduce differences in care and improve health outcomes for children and young people, wherever they live.

The plan also supports closer working between the NHS, schools, social care and partner organisations. This includes groups such as DigiBete, Diabetes UK and Breakthrough T1D.

It sets out clear goals and actions to help teams improve care. It will also help services share ideas, learn from each other and work together more closely.
