Delivering at scale through mutual aid, productivity and shared capacity
As the NHS faces rising demand and financial pressures, provider collaboratives are showing the value of working together. By sharing skills, resources and responsibility, trusts can improve services, make better use of capacity and deliver benefits for patients.
The North East and North Cumbria Provider Collaborative brings together all 11 foundation trusts in the region, including acute, community, mental health and ambulance services. A key focus has been helping trusts support each other when demand is high.
So far, around 2,000 patients have been moved between providers to help reduce waiting times and improve access to care. This shared approach means capacity can be used more effectively across the region. Staff, facilities and services are increasingly being seen as assets for the whole system, rather than for individual organisations alone.
The collaborative has also agreed to develop a shared Patient Tracking List (PTL) through the Federated Data Platform (FDP). This will create a single view of waiting lists across the region. It will help teams spot pressures earlier and arrange support between organisations before problems grow.
