Community Diagnostic Centre in Workington reaches major milestone

The Community Diagnostic Centre in Workington is already making a real difference for people in North Cumbria.

Since opening last July, the centre has delivered more than 30,000 diagnostic appointments. This has helped many patients get tests sooner and closer to home.

The purpose-built centre offers a range of tests, including MRI, CT, Ultrasound, heart scans and lung function testing. By providing these services in the community, the centre is reducing the need for people to travel to hospital sites and is easing pressure on busy hospital services.

Activity levels continue to increase. Thousands of CT, Ultrasound and MRI scans have already been delivered. The centre is now providing up to 4,000 tests each month, with 46,000 appointments planned for the next financial year.

Patients are reporting positive experiences. Feedback highlights quicker access to tests, shorter waiting times and a calmer environment. Free parking, extended opening hours and a modern setting are helping services fit better around people’s daily lives.

The team is also growing the service. New testing pathways and one visit clinics are being introduced, along with new services such as Urology and Upper Gastrointestinal testing. The centre is open seven days a week from 8am to 8pm to meet local needs.

The Workington Community Diagnostic Centre supports the wider work of the NENC Provider Collaborative to improve access to diagnostics, support earlier diagnosis and provide care closer to home for patients across the region.
