Better access to NHS tests across the North East
People across the North East will soon find it easier to get NHS tests closer to home.
More than £10 million of funding has been secured to expand the Metrocentre Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC). The centre is run by Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust and The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

This funding will support Phase Two of the centre. It builds on Phase One, which opened in October 2024 after £18.6 million of investment.
When the expansion is complete, it will provide:
- Over 38,000 more tests and appointments each year
- Quicker results for patients
- Care closer to where people live
Since opening, the Metrocentre CDC has already helped more than 75,000 patients. It is playing a key role in finding health problems earlier and reducing pressure on hospitals.
This project is a strong example of what working together across the North East and North Cumbria can achieve. Through the Provider Collaborative and the Great North Healthcare Alliance, NHS organisations are sharing skills and resources to improve care.
The next phase of investment will make a real difference for thousands more patients. It will help more people get the tests they need, at the right time, and closer to home.
