The Elephant in the Room: New regional campaign to support young people’s sexual health

The Elephant in the Room campaign is now live across the North East and North Cumbria, helping young people aged 15–24 feel more informed, confident and supported when it comes to their sexual health.

Developed in partnership by NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB), Durham County Council on behalf of 13 local authorities, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID), this campaign forms the first phase of a wider regional approach to improving sexual health outcomes.

Why the campaign is needed

The region continues to experience some of the highest rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in England, with young people aged 15–24 accounting for around half of all new diagnoses.

Despite this, many young people still face real barriers to seeking support including stigma, embarrassment, misinformation and uncertainty about where to go.

The Elephant in the Room tackles these challenges by encouraging honest, open conversations and helping young people access reliable information and services.

What the campaign is doing

The campaign has been designed with young people’s voices and experiences at its core. It aims to:

  • Normalise conversations about sexual health
  • Challenge myths and misinformation that often circulate among young people
  • Promote condom use and regular STI testing
  • Signpost to free, confidential local sexual health services
